Five things you need to know about laser hair removal for darker skin

Laser hair removal has revolutionised the way we tackle unwanted body hair – and with new developments in technology and equipment, it’s now suitable for all skin types. If you have a darker skin tone and you’ve been wondering whether laser hair removal is right for you, read on…

1. What do you classify as darker skin tones?

We use the Fitzpatrick Chart to distinguish between different skin tones. Take a look at the chart below to find out which skin type you have. Our state-of-the-art laser is specifically designed to work safely and effectively on skin types 3-6.

2. What makes your laser different?

The problem with most lasers and darker skin tones is the risk of pigmentation (lighter or darker patches) when the skin is exposed to the laser light. This is all down to an amino acid called melanin which gives our skin its colour. The laser we use is the Polaris Long Wave Nd:YAG laser – it’s been specifically developed with darker skin tones in mind. Unlike other lasers, the Nd:YAG light rays absorb very low amounts of melanin, meaning the risk of skin pigmentation is extremely low. Great news for those of us with darker skin
who want to give laser hair removal a go.

3. How many sessions will I need?

Your skin tone doesn’t affect the amount of sessions you’ll need. As with lighter skin tones, six is usually the minimum number of sessions you’ll need to achieve long-lasting reduction in growth and you may need up to twelve to see real results. When you come in for your consultation, we’ll be able to talk trough your treatment plan and even offer treatment packages and finance options.

4. How should I prepare for laser hair removal if I have darker skin?

Prepping for laser hair removal helps you get the most out of the treatment and ensures that your skin is safe from potential damage. In the four weeks running up to your first session, stop using skincare products with harsh ingredients like glycolic or salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide and any retinoids. These products make your skin more sensitive to laser energy. Stay out of the sun as much as possible, and avoid any tanning cosmetics in order to lower the risk of pigmentation. For best results, shave 24 hours before your appointment. This will give just the right amount of hair growth to allow the laser energy to travel to the root of each hair.

5. Are the results of treatment the same on dark skin?

Providing you prep well for treatment, you’ll get exactly the same results as those with lighter skin tones. Not only does the Nd:YAG laser reduce hair growth but it also straightens the hairs, meaning you’ll get less ingrown hairs throughout treatment. You’ll start to see results after the very first session. And as you move through your treatment plan, you’ll notice fewer hairs regrowing with each session. If you’d like to find out more about laser hair removal for darker skin tones, book in for a consultation.
